Coach Mikayla Wins Laura Viney Award for Women's Leadership

One of Portland Tennis & Education's own, Mikayla Posey, was selected for the Laura Viney Award for Women's Leadership. Presented by the Institute of International Education, the national award is granted to one individual each year who advances education and lifts the quality of life for women and children in a measurable way around the world. Coach Mikayla was chosen for the volunteer work she did while in Germany as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant and the work she continues to do at PT&E. In addition to teaching at a local German school during her Fulbright, Coach Mikayla was a travel correspondent for Reach the World, a nonprofit in New York. Using their online platform, she shared articles, videos and photos with classrooms in the US, illustrating her experience in Germany and increasing students' understanding of their global community. Coach Mikayla also volunteered with refugee programs in Frankfurt while abroad, organizing biweekly gatherings for refugee families and youth, where they could play, eat and receive information about integration services available to them.

Coach Mikayla traveled to Washington DC to receive the award from Institute of International Education at their annual board meeting. She also accompanied IIE staff to the Capitol, meeting with congressmen, including our own Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley, to advocate for the Fulbright Program and share about the work of PT&E.

Congrats Mikayla! We are very excited to have you as a part of our team.
