West Hills Racquet and Fitness Club Brings Books!

It has become a yearly tradition for the generous members of the West Hills Racquet and Fitness Club (WHRFC) to choose a Scholar Athlete to buy a Christmas book for. On Tuesday 1/15 members of the WHRFC came to deliver these wonderful gifts! Our Scholar Athletes were thrilled to get copies of some of their favorite books or ones they have been excited to read.

Thank you to all of the members of the WHRFC who participated in what has become a wonderful yearly tradition! We greatly appreciate your support and our students love their new books!

PT&E Goes Rock Climbing

This past Sunday 12 members of the PT&E family took a trip to the Mazamas Mountaineering Center to learn how to rock climb! Our Scholar Athletes learned proper rock climbing technique and got a chance to climb with the help of 7 wonderful Mazamas volunteers. A huge thank you to Mazamas for making this day possible! We are excited to partner with you more in the future. Here are a few photos from the event.

Todos Tenis Program Wraps Up With Final Celebration

On Friday (12/14) we hosted our final Todos Tenis event of 2018. It was a night of celebration filled with prizes, delicious food and of course a lot of tennis! Todos Tenis is a program that we started in 2016 to connect the LatinX community to the sport of tennis through weekly family tennis nights. This fall we offered 8 family tennis days on Friday nights and 8 Junior Lesson days on Sunday mornings. Over 155 people, ranging from age 4 to 55, attended these events, some of whom were playing tennis for the very first time!

This program was made possible thanks to a generous grant from the USTA Foundation and we hope to continue to have more Todos Tenis days in the year to come!

A huge thank you to Daniel Valenzuela who filmed and edited this video, that perfectly encapsulates our Todos Tenis final celebration.

And last but not least thank you to all of the community members who attended our Todos Tenis nights and filled them with energy and joy! We hope to see you at the St. Johns Racquet Center sometime soon.

Coach Danice Returns for the Annual PT&E Family Gingerbread House Competition!

It was an extra special last day of program for 2018! This past Thursday our beloved Coach Danice returned to PT&E and our Scholar Athletes were thrilled to see her and hear her stories of hanging out with koalas, swimming in the Great Barrier Reef and exploring Australia.

The fun reunion with Coach Danice was then followed by our annual Family Gingerbread House Competition. Each family or a team of families had 20 minutes to construct the most impressive gingerbread house, or in some cases gingerbread villages, to impress our esteemed judges and win!

It was the perfect way to end another wonderful year of program at PT&E. A huge thank you to Coach Danice it was great to have you back!

Here are a few pictures from the event:

Nike Visits PT&E and They Brought Books!

Christmas came early to the Scholar Athletes at PT&E yesterday when 16 employees from Nike visited our after school program! The employees from Nike had the chance to experience a typical day at program as they helped with homework and played tennis with our Scholar Athletes.

On top of that our friends from Nike brought special books (or in some cases a few books) for every single one of our Scholar Athletes. Each Scholar Athlete submitted their reading interests and employees at Nike had the chance to pick a Scholar Athlete so the books they received were just what they love to read.

A huge thank you to the Nike employees who came and spent time with our Scholar Athletes! We are also very grateful to those who could not come to program but still donated these meaningful books.

It was another great day at PT&E!

Tennis Legend James Blake Visits PT&E

Our Scholar Athletes had the privilege of meeting the US Tennis Legend James Blake when he visited PT&E on Friday, November 2nd!

James met with our Scholar Athletes, played tennis with PT&E donors, answered questions and shared his incredible success story. It was a wonderful opportunity for our Scholar Athletes!

Thank you to the donors at the 3rd Annual Gala who made a generous donation to help fund James Blake’s visit to PT&E.

The donors had the chance to meet James Blake and play doubles with him and our Scholar Athletes were thrilled to watch a former pro play. After playing tennis James answered questions from our Scholar Athletes and shared how hard work, positivity and perseverance led him to where he is today. Following the Q&A session our Scholar Athletes had the chance to show off their skills on the court playing with and against James.

It was truly an honor to meet James. Thank you James and to everyone who made this inspiring day possible!

PT&E Scholar Athletes Celebrate Trail Blazers Foundation Grant at the Moda Center

PT&E was thrilled to receive a generous grant from the Trail Blazers Foundation. To celebrate this honor Coach Mikayla and two hard-working Scholar Athletes attended the Blazers v. Timberwolves game on 11/4 to represent PT&E and enjoy a Blazers victory.

Chris and Brenda were selected as the Scholar Athletes to attend the game after winning a writing competition among all of the older Scholar Athletes at PT&E. Chris wrote a poem and Brenda wrote an essay about why sports are important to them. They had a wonderful time cheering the Blazers on to victory!

Go PT&E and go Trail Blazers!

Last Passport Oregon Trip of the Year

This weekend our Scholar Athletes went looking for Sasquatch while exploring the Ape Caves with Passport Oregon!

13 of our Scholar Athletes and two coaches climbed through a nearly mile long cave, using flash lights and head lamps to guide the way, before enjoying a delicious lunch on Yale Lake in front of Mt. St Helens.
It was an awesome way to wrap up our fall adventures and our biggest Passport Oregon trip yet!

PT&E High School Academy Student Work Shadow

Yesterday all of our staff dressed up as their favorite super heroes for Halloween but on Tuesday Rosie, a senior in our high school academy, had the chance to visit a real life hero!

Rosie spent the evening shadowing "Coach Lu" at Randall Children's Hospital, where Lu works as a nurse in the Neonatal ICU (intensive care unit).

Luehna is one of the hundreds of scholar athletes who have benefited from PT&E. She was a member of the PT&E High School Academy and honed her academic and tennis skills at St. John's Racquet Center before graduating from Benson High School in 2011. She attended Linfield College where she received a Bachelors of Science in Nursing and then came back to be a coach tutor at PT&E before continuing her career in medicine.

As Rosie quickly approaches graduation she is thrilled to have the opportunity to shadow PT&E alumni like Coach Lu who are living fulfilling and productive lives. Rosie plans to attend college next year and may pursue a degree in nursing just like our beloved Coach Lu!
