Our lasting impact

Supporting our community for nearly 30 years

Long Lasting Legacy

Hartzog award

Founded in 1996, PT&E’s programs are community driven and designed. Our founder, Dr. Ernest Hartzog, was a leader in both the tennis community and Portland Public Schools, where he witnessed how families were facing systemic barriers to success, like lack of access to health resources and recreation. We are grateful to Dr. Hartzog for his vision to create a healthier Portland, and his continued guidance as a member of the PT&E Board of Directors.

Intentionally inclusive

We’re building an inclusive community where age, income, and ability are never obstacles to play or learning. PT&E is a non-membership, low-cost, and culturally-responsive organization with programs for everyone.

18,000 YOUTH SERVED

Since 1996, PT&E has empowered more than 18,000 youth through tuition-free, holistic programs designed to level the playing field — in the classroom, on the court, and in the community. PT&E exists to be a trusted community resource and safe haven. Our programs support local students’ success, supplementing the efforts of under-resourced schools in our community. At PT&E, each student receives over 1,000 hours of annual support, including academic, health, character development, and family engagement programming.

All local high school seniors who participated in PT&E programs since our founding have graduated on-time to pursue the postsecondary path of their choosing, including higher education, trade school, and military service.
